Homophones

Homophones are words that sound alike but are spelt differently. In other words, they are pronounced exactly the same but have different spellings. The following are some examples of homophones:

1 straight [not crooked] – strait [narrow waterway]

2 right [correct] – rite [ritual]

3 acts [things done] – axe [chopping tool]

4 very [extremely] – vary [change]

5 heal [to cure a disease] – heel [hind part of shoe]

6 plain [not fancy] – plane [a flat or level surface]

7 idle [not working] – idol [object of worship]

8 more [additional] – moor [swampy coastland]
