How the brain remembers things

Yesterday, I went shopping with my wife and daughter in a supermarket in Bayan Baru. While they were choosing their clothes which will usually take quite some time, I was browsing some books in the Book Section. A self-motivation book caught my eye. I was in luck because normally such books are wrapped in plastic paper to prevent others from reading them, making them look old. As the book was not covered with plastic paper, I started to read it.

In the book, I learnt a few useful things. For example, the human brain contains 28 billion neurons or nerve cells, each of which can process one million bits of information. Imagine how much information can your brain process. Our thoughts, positive or otherwise will be impressed on the synapses of the brain. The more frequent similar positive thoughts land on them, the more we can remember those thoughts. Likewise, if negative thoughts occupy most of our mind, they too will be impressed on the synapses overwriting them. In learning, if we keep revising the same facts, we will remember them better.

I did an experiment using the above theory and read through the 26 things to be remembered for self-motivation five times with normal reading speed. Then I closed the book. At that time, my wife and daughter had come to meet me, empty-handed because they could not find what they wanted. I reproduced from memory the ABC of self-motivation from the book as below but I forgot about the ones for E and R. So I added in mine, i.e. “Every cloud has a silver lining” and “Recover from failure as soon as it happens”. This experiment showed that we must keep revising our facts or reaffirming ourselves of some positive thoughts to make them stay in our mind.

The ABC of self-motivation from my memory of the book I browsed in the supermarket yesterday is put in word form below.

Avoid all negative sources, people, things and habits.

Believe in yourself.

Continue to work harder and it will get better.

Don’t up and give in.

Every cloud has a silver lining.

Friends and family members are our treasure.

Give more than what you wanted to give.

Hang on to your dreams

Ignore those who try to discourage you.

Just do it.

Keep trying harder to achieve what you want.

Love yourself first and foremost.

Make your dreams come true.

Never lie, steal or cheat. Strike a fair deal.

Open your eyes and see things as they really are.

Practice makes perfect.

Quitters never win and winners never quit.

Recover from failure as soon as it happens.

Stop procrastinating.

Take control of your destiny.

Understand yourself better in order to understand others.

Visualise your dreams

Want it more than anything

Xcelerate your efforts.

You are unique in all of the Nature’s creations, No one can replace you.

Zero in on your target and go for it.

OMG that is so cool!! The power of the human brain is indeed amazing. I shall remember this way of reading for my studying habits in the future. :D
