Preoccupation with my work and other things must have stopped me from blogging for so long. Now, I hope to engage in my passion - blogging again.

Two days more and the Chinese will be celebrating Xin Nian or Chinese New Year. This year it will be the Year of the Rooster.

You see, the Chinese will assign one animal out of 12 for each year and the cycle will start again. The animals in order are Rat, Cow, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. As last year was the Year of the Monkey, hence this year it will be the Year of the Rooster according to the order mentioned.

It seems it will be a good year for me who was born in the Year of the Cow. Those who were born in the Year of the Monkey and in the Year of the Dragon will be a good year too. I hope to be happy, healthy and have enough money to spend.

I take this opportunity to wish all Chinese over the world, a very happy and prosperous Xin Nian.
There were two cinemas in Jerantut but I can't recall the names right now. Anyway, there would be a movie that attracted both of us in either of movie-screening houses. I used to fetch Jimmy with my Honda C-70 bike (ridden all the way from Penang with my friend, Yong Cheng Suan who is still in Raub) when we wanted to see any movie of our choice.

We liked centre-corner seats and we were given H1 and H2 seats every time I put my hand in to pay for the cinema tickets. The ticket-seller must have recognised the Citizen watch I was wearing then. After the show Jimmy would be in my rented house in Ruby Garden chatting with my housemates Tan Ching Hong, Boo Ching Kee and Simon Ching.

Later Jimmy further his studies in India after obtaining a scholarship to do an engineering course there. Since then I have not heard of Jimmy until my student Shirley Teh told me the he married her cousin and had three children.I hope Jimmy is as pink in health as he was then.

The photo of us is below this post. Look at the bell bottoms of our pants. It was the fashion then. He towered over me in this photo taken 38 years ago.
I hope to be able to write more things in 2014 - Year of the Horse.

My preoccupation of last year was to look for ways to live a healthy life. I have learnt of quite a lot of food to avoid and the ones that are of benefit to me. It seems that simple vegetables such as sweet potato leaves, amaranth and 'hong tay chai' or king's vegetables contain goodness for our health. One of these has been picked as '10 top anti-oxidant food'. Sweet potato leaves belong to this group. Hence you should cook more dishes with sweet potato leaves. However, excessive consumption of this vegetable can be too 'cooling' for the elderly and they may suffer from weak knee.

I also engaged myself in the world of languages, learning from Tamil to Japanese. My very purpose is to sharpen my mind and prevent my brains from dementia. Jawi writing also took up some of my time. If you are left-handed, writing Jawi will be very much easier for you.

Applying force on acupuncture points to promote health also interested me for the last one year. I marvelled at the wisdom of ancient Chinese who had discovered acupuncture.

Being religious, I still listen to dharma talks by monks. I like every talk of Rev Suvano. The late monk delivered his talk in Hokkien and there are always interesting stories related to Buddhism that he included in his dharma talk.

So much for my reflection on last year's life experinces.
To the Chinese, it means they will be one year older on this very day. Every we go, especially at the market place, tangyuen or glutinous rice dumplings will be on sale. After savouring tangyuen you are considered to have gain one more year in age.

According to one legend, tangyuen was prepared to signify reunion of family members. The story had it that one day, a father, a mother and a daughter was travelling in the cold looking for food. The mother was too tired to walk anymore and finally she died of exhaustion. In order to pay for her burial, the father was force to sell his daughter to be a slave to a rich man. Before leaving her to her master, the father begged for some porridge to feed her to wake her up from her being unconscious because she fainted owing to fatigue. When she finally came to, the father again went to ask for some glutinous rice balls for her to eat. The filial daughter would not eat it, neither would the father. Hence they broke the rice balls into halves to be shared among them, promising to eat full rice balls when they met again one day.

The next year, the daughter asked her master to make rice balls to be placed on the door outside the house in the hope that her father would see them and came to see her. However, she was disappointed. The following year, she put the rice balls all over the places. The neighbours also do the same to help her find her father. Later eating glutinous rice dumplings became a custom to signify reunion of family members.

So much for the origin of tangyuen.
It is a feat as it is not easy to abstain from food unless you have been doing it every year like the Muslims. As I have said before, fasting is good for health for when our body stops receiving food for a certain period, the organs inside our body will do repair work to all the organs function even better. Detoxification is one of the processes that will take place when we fast.
In today's post, I would like to remind readers of the teachings of Buddha so that we will emulate Him and be good citizens of the world.

Basically, Gautama Buddha who had attained enlightenment or buddhahood told the world the truth about our lives. According to the Buddha, humann beings suffer because of three things, namely avarice, hatred and delusion.

When we are greedy, we are satisfied with what we have and hence crave for more things. Sometimes we resort to stealing, cheating or murdering in order to get what we want. Such act will land us in trouble. We may be caught and put in jail to suffer. Being not contented with what we have already possessed makes us unhappy - an example of suffering.

Hating others will also make us unhappy. Such feeling may lead to insulting others by words, injuring others by weapons and ending the lives of others by some other means. Once again, we suffer because of this feeling or harbouring hatred towards others.

Delusion is the state of not fully understanding the true nature of things. We think that things around us are forever ours. This is not true. Even the water in the glass keeps changing in terms of the movement of molecules within. It becomes less and less as the molecules gain more energy and change into vapour and escape into the air. Hence we feel very sad when someone dear to us passes away.

To overcome the three evils, we must practise dana or donating things to others to get rid of greed or avarice. If we are willing to part with our money or things so that they go to the needy, we are not greedy anymore. In fact doing dana will reap things many folds in return if it is practised with sincerity and without attachment whatsoever.

As for surmounting the hurdle of hatred, we should practise loving kindness and compasion towards others. According to Buddhism, beings around us might be our relatives sometime in the past when rebirths occur every now and then. Think of the one you hate as your mother, sister or aunt if the person is a female and think of him as your father, brother or uncle. The one you hate is your relative in the past and hence you should forgive him and love him or her stead.

Delusion can only be overcome if we understand the impermanence of things around us. There is nothing that last forever. Hence we should practise detachment. We must not cling to someone as if he or she will be forever ours. We have to say goodbye to our beloved when the time comes and we should attach too much to him or her so that the feeling of loss will bot be so great.

So much for some reminder of the teaching of the Buddha on Wesak Day today.TH Yeohhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00077369699027376868noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-405910178351090835.post-64765530100901095832013-02-13T21:04:00.000+08:002013-02-13T21:04:00.449+08:00Kitchen Deity is back todayThe Kitchen Deity is back today after having been in the Jade Emperor's Palace for four days reporting the going-on in each household he resides in.

Traditionally the Chinese will welcome the Kitchen Deity back to Earth on the 4th day of the Xin Nian. Offering in the form of fruit and cakes will be display on the altar while praying.

I am of the opinion that it may not be true that the deity will report what goes on in our house to the Jade Emperor. Yet it is a good thing if it is so as it will act as a deterrent for family members to be on guard and do what is right so that no bad things will be reported to the Jade Emperor.

In real life, laws are introduced to keep human beings disciplined and deter crimes. We don't like to spend our lives in jail and be despised by others when we are released from prisons and therefore we will not do anything against the laws to put ourselves at risk of being arrested and sentenced to prison.

On this auspicious, we look forward to a very prosperous year to come. To keep all things unpleasant away, we are forbidden to sweep the floor because as is the belief of the Chinese, rubbish represents 'cai' or money /property and to get rid of it on this year is to drive away wealth.

Children and adults alike are not supposed to say bad words to one another for the same reason - keeping things unpleasant.
The very purpose of this dinner is to get all members of the family together at least once a year. To me, this is a very good practice as we get to hear news from other members of the family and to get over the 'missing you' feeling since we can't meet on normal day. This is because we may not work in the same state.

Parents will give their children 'ya sui qian' in the form of 'angpow' or red packet to be placed under the pillow while sleeping. It is meant to keep the children safe and healthy for the coming year.
I was lucky today for I managed to come here to do my first post of the year.

The Chinese New Year or Xin Nian is just 7 days away and everywhere at the market places you can see vendor selling Xin Nian decorations and Nian Gao or the the typical glutinous rice dumpling offered to the Kitchen Deity tomorrow the 24th day of the 12th moon according to the lunar calendar. Legend has it that the dumpling is made sweet so that He will only report the good things to the Jade Emperor of the household he resides in. He will return to the Earth on the 4th day of 1st month, that is the 4th day of Xin Nian to reside in every devotee's house.

Human beings are really funny. We only want to hear good things about us and detest the mention of anything back about us. In real life situation, words pleasing to the ear really make others happy and the very utterance of hurt-causing words will send streams of anger and sadness down one's throat. Hence, why not say only good things about others and forget about their bad things whatever they are.

For this Xin Nian, let us start the year by saying good things to brighten up life.

Every where you can see most of the Chinese buying cakes, fruits, 'buah rambai' (a type of fruit that comes in bunches) to be offered to the Hungry Ghosts when they pray.

According to Buddhism, there are six realms one has to go through if one has not attained nirvana. One of the realms is the hungry ghosts. It is believed that the seventh month of the lunar calendar is the month when hungry are released from the Ghosts' Realm. Hence their relatives who are still living will offer food for them, especially today although it lasts for a month.

It reminds the Buddhists that they should do good and practise Buddhism so that when they pass away they will be born as beings outside the samsara (Six Realms, which are human beings, dewas, azuras, animals, ghosts and hell) and stop the rebirth processes.
They will celebrate their success in overcoming hunger during the day from dawn until sunset for the said period. The act teaches them to appreciate the suffering of the poor especially those who have to go hungry because of the scarcity of food caused by drought or war.

The Malays in Malaysia usually will have open houses and invite friends of other races to enjoy the food prepared for them. These include 'lemang' (glutinous rice put in bamboo and placed over the fire to be cooked), 'ketupat' (glutinous rice wrapped in coconut leaves and steamed), 'dodol' (glutinous rice stirred continuously while being cooked for hours until the mixture of sugar and rice turn brown', 'rendang' (chicken or beef cooked in spices until it is well done) and other Malay 'kuih'. Personally I like to eat 'ketupat' and 'dodol'. Being more of a vegetarian now, I do not like the meat stuff.

Once again, I would like to extend my belated greeting to all readers who are Muslims on this festive occasion.TH Yeohhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00077369699027376868noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-405910178351090835.post-21893860816966463582012-08-08T11:56:00.001+08:002012-08-08T12:31:14.163+08:00Watching the London Olympic Games 2012I am sure most of us will watch the 4-year-once Olympic Games. For this year, the venue is in London. I am very happy to be able to watch the games through my computer. The International Olympic Council has done a good job by asking Youtube to show the video clips to the world. Because of this arrangement, we can go to the following website to watch the games:
www.youtube.com/olympic

There are also video clips of past events which you might have missed. You can click them and let the Samsung Galaxy S3's ads disturb you for 30 seconds. Then the video clips will start to play. If you like the clips and would like to watch them again later on, you can right click the url of the video clips and download with Free Youtube Downloader so that you can watch them offline and delete them when you don't want them anymore.
Being a Malaysian, I know too well the religious practice of the Malays all of whom are Muslims here. One of them is 'berpuasa' or fasting. They would start abstaining from food after 'makan sahur' (consuming food after midnight and before dawn prior to fasting). Then they will fast at 'imsak' or when the sun rises. For today, my Malay friend told me that the time for 'berbuka puasa' (breaking fast) was 7.38pm. I understand that the time varies from day to day and from place to place.

Personally I feel that fasting is good for health because when the body is devoid of food, all the organs will start to work to make them function better.
He told the crowd around him that the abrasive piece is very good as it can remove carbonised coating on the wok's bottom by rubbing it with the aid of water.

To prove that it is really water and not other chemical that he poured from his bottle, he drank the water first before pouring it onto the bottom of the pot he was dealing with. If you look at his action, you will surely be convinced that it is water all right and not chemical of any sort.
He has proven his point in a simple way.TH Yeohhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00077369699027376868noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-405910178351090835.post-90385857665041939062012-07-11T15:25:00.001+08:002012-07-11T15:33:13.843+08:00How to use 'bazir' and its other derivativesMany users get confused when using 'bazir'. The following are the common mistakes related to this word.
1 Jangan bazir semasa menggunakan air.
2 Dia membazir wang yang banyak untuk membeli kad prayar telefon bimbit.

You cannot use 'bazir' (to waste) by itself. By adding the prefix meN you can form the intransitive verb 'membazir' which has no object. Hence sentence 2 above is wrong. The correct sentence to be constructed is 'Dia suka membazir semasa menggunakan air.' [He likes to waste water.]

The word 'bazir' can be turned into a transitive verb (a verb that takes an object) by adding the affix 'meN_kan'. The verb formed is 'membazirkan' (to waste + object). A typical sentence you can make with this verb is 'Adik sering membazirkan air semasa mandi.' (My younger brother often wastes water when he bathes.)

The correction for sentence 1 is 'Jangan membazir semasa menggunakan air.' (Don't waste when you use water.)
Usually, food will be offered when they pray in front of the grave.

As a regular practice, the Chinese will clean up the graves before doing the praying. This can be done 10 days before or 10 days after Qing Ming. If the inscriptions on the grave have become blur, the words will be repainted with red or gold powder.

I went to my late father's grave with my sister last Saturday to do the cleaning-up and resurfacing of soil on the grave. We had to buy RM60 for 6 bags of soil for the job. The man skilfully carried 6 bags of the stuff on his Honda C70 bike from somewhere to where my late father's grave was and helped do the topping up of soil. Then we put the yellow paper on the surface and use pebbles to press them down in case the wind blew them away, at least for the period when we pray. Then it is time to place food and fruits in front of the grave before we start to pray. The burning of paper money, paper shoes and clothes were done after tossing two coins to get consent. If head and tail shows up, we can start the burning job.

Although burning such paper items will not benefit anyone, it is the custom of the Chinese and a way to show their respect to the dead.

What we did in front of my late father's grave will be almost the same for the other visitors to the same graveyard.

Relatives of new graves have to come to clean up and do the pray on Qing Ming Day. On the fourth year, they can come 10 days before or after Qing Ming to do the task.

That's all for Qing Ming for today's post.TH Yeohhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00077369699027376868noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-405910178351090835.post-56681411303997125532012-03-26T12:45:00.004+08:002012-03-26T13:02:08.887+08:00Weight lossWeight loss is the concern of most obese people. By this I mean those whose BMI or Body Mass Index is beyond the normal range. BMI is calculated by diving the body weight in kg by height (in metre) squared. For example, I am 1.60 metre and 60 kg in weight. My BMI is 60 / 1.6X1.6 which is 60/2.56 and my final BMI is 23.43. I am normal in weight and height because the normal range is 18.5 to 24.9.

Those with BMI exceeding 24.9 is overweight and those below 18.5 is underweight.

The former group will think of ways to effect weight loss so as to fall within the normal BMI range.

You can achieve your weight loss through dieting, that is cutting down on the intake of fat, starch and sugar. Exercising regularly will also enable you to cause weight loss in your body.

My friend tells me of a way to bring about weight loss. According to him, when you have your lunch or dinner, start by eating the vegetables and meat first because by then your stomach will have been filled with food and fluid and you will eat less of rice.

If your state of being overweight is due to hormonal causes, you will have to see your doctor to rectify it so that weight loss will be rendered possible.

Proper diet and exercising are the best ways to solve the problem of having to think of ways to effect weight loss to your body.TH Yeohhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00077369699027376868noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-405910178351090835.post-52956796563761003042012-03-18T11:00:00.003+08:002012-03-18T11:13:45.777+08:00How to remote control your computer at homeI have learnt of a way to remote control your computer at home and I would like to share this knowledge with readers of this blog.

Suppose you need to do something using the computer at home. It may be to transfer a file, to download a file and others.

There is a free software for non-c0mmercial use which you can use to do the above task. It is called teamviewer. You can download it at http://www.teamviewer.com free of charge. With this software you can manipulate the computer at home even if you are at your office. However, you have to install the software in the computer at home and the one in your office or somewhere such as in your friend's house. After doing that, you just need to key in the ID generated by the software and the password for the computer at home. In this case, you can set a fixed password which you can create by clicking the extras folder and create the password which you can use when you are at your office. Once the software connects you to the computer at home, you can manipulate your home computer as if you were sitting right in front of it. How wonderful!

Happy downloading teamviewer and start remote controlling your home computer from your office or your friend's house.TH Yeohhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00077369699027376868noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-405910178351090835.post-29579569152404716392012-02-29T23:20:00.003+08:002012-02-29T23:33:49.570+08:00How to use 'berjaja' and 'menjajakan' correctlyIn Malaysia, we have the chance to see 'hawkers' or vendors who sell things from place to place everywhere we go. Sometimes, they call out the names of the items or food sold. In the Malay language, they are known as 'penjaja'.

In reference books written by writers who do not pay attention to standard usage or for that matter the grammatical aspect of the language, the following sentence often appears in their books:
Mak Minah menjaja kuih-muih di tepi jalan. [wrong]

The above sentence should have been: 'Mak Minah menjajakan kuih-muih di tepi jalan.' [Mak Minah is selling various 'kuih' (something like cakes in English) by the road through hawking.']

The word 'menjaja' is not in the dictionary and hence non-existent. However, you can use 'berjaja' the intransitive verb for 'to hawk'. A sentence such as the one below can be constructed to show its correct usage:

Ahmad berjaja untuk menyara keluarganya. [Ahmad sells things by hawking to support his family.]

I hope by now readers and students of the Malay language are clear about the usage of 'berjaja' and 'menjajakan'. Remember not to use 'menjaja' anymore as it is non-existent.TH Yeohhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00077369699027376868noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-405910178351090835.post-49383987667740109212012-02-06T23:04:00.002+08:002012-02-06T23:14:41.090+08:00Pick up my mandarin orange and be my Mr RightToday is Yuan Xiao Jie or Chap Goh Meh in Hokkien. It is the 15th day and last day of Chinese New Year.

Yuan Xiao Jie is the equivalent of Valentine's Day - a day lovers will meet. In ancient China, maidens will be allowed to come out on this night, hoping to find a good husband. Once she takes a liking to someone, the parents will send people to negotiate for a proper wedding.

There is also the custom of throwing mandarin oranges into the river in the hope of getting a good husband as the saying goes 'Tim Kam, cuai ho ang' (Throwing mandarin oranges to get good husbands). In modern time, the unmarried ladies will write their names and mobile phone numbers on the fruits before hurling them into the water or river. Young men will then pick them up, ring the numbers to strike up a relationship.

Happy throwing mandarin oranges on Chap Goh Meh.TH Yeohhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00077369699027376868noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-405910178351090835.post-62166961752985124982012-02-04T23:44:00.003+08:002012-02-05T00:02:17.026+08:00Making a beeline for the canteenMy eyes caught sight of the sentence below 'Champion hawkers riding high' which reads
'Customers are making a beeline to the stalls of the newly crowned 'kings'.

The above captions appeared in a local newspaper which I read this morning.

In the second sentence, 'making a beeline to' is wrong usage. It should be 'making a beeline for'.

Let me construct a sentence to illustrate the correct usage:

As soon the bell for recess was rung, the pupils made a beeline for the canteen.

It means they headed straight to the canteen to satisfy their hunger.

I hope the newspaper will be more careful so as to avoid grammatical errors such as the one mentioned in this post.TH Yeohhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00077369699027376868noreply@blogger.com0
